COACHES CLINIC

On Saturday September 30th, B.A.K Enterprises Inc., in conjunction with Basketball X-Perts, hosted over thirty coaches representing the New England and Tri-State areas to a coaches clinic at MassBay Community College’s Framingham Gymnasium. This coaches clinic featured some of the most noteworthy coaches in the country. Bill Raynor (Harvard University, Brown University, Holy Cross, MassBay), Jim O’Brien (St. Boneventure, Boston College, Ohio State University), Mike Leflar (University of Pennsylvania, Boston University), George Blaney (Stonehill College, Holy Cross, Seton Hall, Dartmouth College, UCONN), and Dennis Wolff (St. Bonaventure, Trinity College, Virginia, Wake Forest, Southern Methodist University, Boston University) were the featured speakers.

BILL RAYNOR - Bill Raynor served as the Head men’s basketball coach at Holy Cross for four years. Raynor is the first Crusader coach to begin his career with back to back winning seasons since Frank Oftrig did it in 1963. In his first two seasons, Raynors teams developed a reputation for being strong to the finish. Raynor was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame October 2006.

Coach Raynor instructed coaches on the flex offense. He knows the flex as well as anyone in the country, having used it throughout his career. Flex is the same offence that Al Skinner’s BC team used to advance to the Sweet Sixteen in the 2005 NCA Tournament.

DENNIS WOLFF - Over the last four years, the Boston University men's basketball team has made a steady climb to the top of the America East Conference standings, and head coach Dennis Wolff has been a driving force in that renaissance. Since the beginning of the 2001-2002 season, the Terriers have compiled a phenomenal 85-36 (.702) record, including a mind-boggling 57-11 (.838) mark in America East games. Under Wolff’s guidance, the Terriers won three straight conference titles (2002-2004) and have made four consecutive postseason appearances for the first time in school history.

Coach Wolf explained the defensive principles that helpes BU keep opponents shooting poor percentages against his teams.

GEORGE BLANEY - During his coaching career, Blaney spent 12 years on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and served as the organization’s president in 1993-94. He has earned numerous honors including the 1996 Bob Cousy Humanitarian Award; 1994 Eastern Basketball Magazine’s Man of the Year; 1990 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year; 1982 inductee into the Holy Cross Hall of Fame; 1981 inductee into the Hudson County Hall of Fame; 1980 U.S. Olympic Festival coach; 1977 Eastern Coach of the Year; and 1976 Hugh Greer Memorial New England Coach of the Year.

Coach Blaney revealed the secrets of how Ben Gordon, Caron Butler & Rudy Gay developed their perimeter skills. He explained the proper shooting technique, including drills that will get the shooter an open shot or in position to make a play.

JIM O'BRIEN - Jim O’Brien is regarded as one of the top basketball coaches in the country. Coach O’Brien amassed numerous awards as the head coach at Ohio State, Boston College, and St. Bonaventure University. In 1999 he led the Ohio State Buckeyes to the Final Four and was named the National Coach of the Year. Jim has always mentored younger coaches and was the recipient of the Doggie Julian award for outstanding service to New England basketball.

The coaches in attendance were treated to O’Brien’s unique style of dealing with the special situations that arise in a basketball game. He offered suggestions on how to put your team in position to win when the game clock is not to your advantage.

MIKE LEFLAR - Leflar’s primary responsibilities are developing the Terriers’ post players and assisting in the day-to-day operations of the program.

Mike knows the game and has a very competitve nature,” said head coach Kelly Greenberg. “He’s had a great effect on the players.”

Coach Leflar explained the concepts behind BU woman's teams high powered, transition offense.
